A Strong Motivator

Paul Cannings - Thursday, April 27, 2017

Someone said, “There are four great impelling motives that move men to action: Fear, Hope, Faith, and Love—these four, but the greatest of these is Fear.” 1 God’s Word instructs us to fear but it is only one kind of fear and that is a reverence fear of God. Solomon puts it this way, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10; Colossians 1:9-12)

In our faith, we have many examples of everyday people who put their trust in God and overcame their fears. David faced the giant Goliath (1 Samuel 17:31-47), Daniel slept with lions (Daniel 6), and the list continues. These men were not great men in the sense that they had extreme strength with bulging muscles or even had extra brain cells. Rather, they simply chose to obey God and expected Him to do what He said He would do. They fought fear with faith. They placed their hope in God whether they lived or died and they chose to love God ‘with all their heart soul and mind.’ (Matthew 22:36-40).

“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6; NASU)
